The Weave House is uniquely designed for a sibling duo and their families. Our design aims to strengthen familial bonds while seamlessly integrating the natural forces of the site, which occupies a unique space at the nexus of Kohala, Hualalai, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa. The site is adjacent to a lush golf course fairway, with breathtaking views of the volcanoes and ocean.

Drawing inspiration from its environment, the design incorporates elements from the surrounding Kohala and Mauna Kea mountains, the local watershed, and the Ka Makani O Kohala (the winds of Kohala mountain). These elements are intricately woven into the very essence of the project, mirroring the concept of two families converging and diverging within the same space.

The home accommodates both communal interactions and individual activities, in an overlapping and multidimensional way.

The residence features two primary bedrooms, each representing the Mauna Kea and Kohala mountains, which support the elevated mass of the second-floor living, dining, and kitchen area (LDK). This strategic design choice maximizes the ocean views available from the upper level. In addition to the upstairs LDK, there is a secondary family gathering space on the lower level.

The architectural weaving extends to the exterior, where the materials are thoughtfully chosen to reflect the project’s core concept. A cantilevered roof gracefully extends over the main lanai, set against a backdrop of natural wood and anchored by a sleek plaster base. The guest and main hales feature an interplay of wood, native rock walls, and light-colored plaster, which together establish the distinctive character of the house.

The Weave House stands as a testament to a thoughtful architectural design in enhancing family relationships. With its scenic location and inspired use of local materials and cultural references, the house not only provides a functional and flexible living space but also crafts an atmosphere of familial connectedness. The Weave House promises to be a nurturing haven for its residents, offering a unique blend of privacy, community, and Hawai‘i Island beauty.
